Why ISIS Could Destroy Itself

صورة
Paul R. Pillar The fortunes of the extreme and violent group known variously as ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State seem to have changed markedly during the past few months. This summer the group was commonly portrayed, amid much alarm, as a relentless juggernaut that was scooping up so much real estate that it was a threat to overrun Baghdad and much else far beyond. But the progress that was so frightening to follow in maps in the newspaper has stopped. The juggernaut has stalled. There will be endless debate about the causes of this change of momentum, ranging from military measures that the United States has taken to the somewhat more enlightened policies of the Iraqi central government. These and other influences have their effects, but the larger phenomenon of the decline of ISIS—decline not just that has happened so far but is yet to come—can be explained most of all by the group's own policies and practices. The abhorrent and inhumane methods of the group are a...

Iraqi Kurdistan: The Middle East's Next 'Little Sparta'?

صورة
The Kurds may be leveraging recent arms agreements to achieve a more direct security relationship with Western powers on the road toward de facto autonomy. When US defence officials want to give a compliment to a junior military partner they will often use the phrase "Little Sparta", referring to the ancient Greek city state revered for its small but potent army. Most recently the phrase has been applied in reference to the UAE. Now Iraqi Kurdistan is making a major play to become the next "Little Sparta". The Peshmerga -- Kurdistan's fighting force -- has always enjoyed the admiration and trust of the US military. Now Iraqi Kurdistan is emerging as an unparalleled launchpad for western operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), offering secure bases with easy access to Mosul, eastern Syria and over a thousand kilometres of ISIL's front-line in Iraq. This week has seen a senior Kurdish delegation ...

The Islamic State Reshapes the Middle East

By  George Friedman Nuclear talks with Iran have failed to yield an agreement, but the deadline for a deal has been extended without a hitch. What would have been a significant crisis a year ago, replete with threats and anxiety, has been handled without drama or difficulty. This new response to yet another failure to reach an accord marks a shift in the relationship between the United States and Iran, a shift that can’t be understood without first considering the massive geopolitical shifts that have taken place in the Middle East, redefining the urgency of the nuclear issue. These shifts are rooted in the emergence of the Islamic State. Ideologically, there is little difference between the Islamic State and other radical Islamic jihadist movements. But in terms of geographical presence, the Islamic State has set itself apart from the rest. While al Qaeda might have longed to take control of a significant nation-state, it primar...

Islamic State Making Millions, Has Enough Weapons to Keep Fighting for Up to Two Years

صورة
By Colleen Curry The Islamic State's staggering wealth amassed through a "diversified portfolio" of revenue streams will make it extraordinarily hard for the US and other countries to stop or cripple the group, experts said today in response to a new United Nations report. The UN Security Council report, released last week, outlines the history and current power of the Islamic State and the al Nusra Front in Iraq and Syria, and advises member nations on a range of possible sanctions that could weaken the groups, including placing members on sanctions lists and asking neighboring countries to seize oil tankers traveling through Islamic State-controlled areas. But the real message of the report was in the detailed outline of what the groups look like now: well-financed, slickly-produced, and highly-trained organizations that, in the Islamic State's case, have the money and weapons to continue fighting at its current pace for up to two years. ...

The US knows perfectly well that Daa'sh poses no danger ...

Foreign Fighters Are Flooding Into Iraq and Syria to Join the Islamic State

By Samuel Oakford An "unprecedented" number of foreign fighters — some 15,000 from more than 80 countries — have made their way to Syria and Iraq, and their numbers continue to grow, according to a UN Security Council report. The findings, disseminated on Thursday by the Australian mission to the UN, which chairs the Security Council's al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, warn that "the horizontal reach of the fighters is far broader than seen before," and "includes a tail of countries that have not previously faced challenges related to Al-Qaida." Most of the fighters in Syria hail from the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, but the report observed that others have also come from the United States and other parts of Asia. Though it does not detail what nations compose the group of 80, the Security Council says that the presence of fighters from "small and medium-sized states" is "important, given that some of the future frontie...

How did Islamists receive American weapons? See the evidence from guided missile that exploded near Syrian front line

صورة
Exclusive: Soldiers near Mediterranean coast tell of daily missile attacks ROBERT FISK Syria’s special forces troops are strung out across a pinnacle of hills here just north east of Lattakia on one of the country’s most dangerous front lines, under daily missile attack from reinforced rebel forces now supported by Isis. The officers, all of whom are paratroopers, speak of new tactics and upgraded weapons used against them since Isis seized the Iraqi city of Mosul - and some of the radio traffic they listen to from their enemy is in the Chechen or Georgian languages. Intelligence reports speak of a unification of various rebel factions calling themselves the “Legion of the Coast”, a clear sign that the Isis-inspired rebels - including Isis supporters themselves - intend to strike westwards towards the Mediterranean, scarcely eight miles away. It’s fair bet that a big battle is shaping up in these pine-covered mountains. The soldiers th...

The tragedy of the Arabs

صورة
A civilisation that used to lead the world is in ruins—and only the locals can rebuild it A THOUSAND years ago, the great cities of Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo took turns to race ahead of the Western world. Islam and innovation were twins. The various Arab caliphates were dynamic superpowers—beacons of learning, tolerance and trade. Yet today the Arabs are in a wretched state. Even as Asia, Latin America and Africa advance, the Middle East is held back by despotism and convulsed by war. Hopes soared three years ago, when a wave of unrest across the region led to the overthrow of four dictators—in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen—and to a clamour for change elsewhere, notably in Syria. But the Arab spring’s fruit has rotted into renewed autocracy and war. Both engender misery and fanaticism that today threaten the wider world. Why Arab countries have so miserably failed to create democracy, happiness or (aside from the windfall of oil) wealth for their 350m people is...
